In 2018, the school engaged with Aboriginal Leaders to collaboratively build a First Nations garden, showcasing bush tucker, a yarning circle, smoking ceremony area, and traditional dance space. Embellished with QR coded signage, this space named 'Durithunga', meaning 'to grow', was officially opened in 2019 with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, celebrating the new and evolving partnerships with First Nations leaders, ARTIE Academy, Logan City Parks Depot and P&C Association.
This cultural space is widely used by staff and the community as an immersion of First Nations culture and history. Students share stories around the Yarning Circle, while developing nature smarts from an early age through first hand experiences. Working in the garden while learning about plants and using the produce for their intended cultural purpose, keeps students connected to a rich and vibrant First Nations history, whilst also being sustainable.
